'Friend request'
Boss on facebook ?!?
Foremost, prior to adhering to any social digital network establish your guidelines and differentiate your connections to broadcast to the World. Think, before ‘Inviting, Accepting or Finding friends’. Give a mission to your networks. There should be a distinction amongst your social, business and maybe even your family networks. Is your facebook profile appropriate for your grandmother?
When receiving a ‘friend request’ from your boss you have 3 click choices; ‘Confirm’, ‘Ignore’ or ‘Send message’.
Confirm = adding your boss to your ‘Friends’. With this option, you may wish to adjust your privacy settings by clicking on ‘customise’.
When clicking on ‘Ignore’ your boss will not be notified and he or she will automatically be removed from your ‘Friend request’ list but your boss may resend a ‘Friend request’.
If you click on neither ‘Confirm’ nor ‘Ignore’ your boss’s request stays in queue.
Third option, ‘Send Message’. I do not recommend sending an explanation of why you choose to decline your boss’s ‘Friend Request’. No matter what words you use your boss will feel rejected.
As an alternate, if you are a member of a more professinal network, such as LinkedIn, I recommend an invitation to that network. It could read: ‘I maintain my business network on LinkedIn,(include your link). I look forward to connecting with you there.’
Julie’s recommendation
Think of the full broadcasting spectrum of your social digital networks prior to clicking. As Oprah says: ‘Doubt means don’t’ so, when not sure don’t post, don’t send, don’t invite, don’t add the photo, simply ignore and don’t do anything.
